The pilot and nine passengers all perished in the crash which burst into flames on impact with the runway. By the time the firefighters made their way to this rural airport, the plane was completely engulfed in flames.
Firefighters were held at bay by the flames because they were so intense, but they were able to extinguish the Alaska air crash fire within 10 minutes of arrival. The de Haviland DCH3 Otter air taxi was operated by the Rediske Company, which is based out of Nikiski, Alaska.
The owner of the company, Willy Rediske, was piloting the plane in this Alaska air crash, so the death of the owner adds double the tragedy for the small Alaska airlines company.
Folks in Alaska frequently fly with the various companies that offer air taxi flights throughout the state, as many of the areas are unaccessable by road at different times of the year. The harsh Alaska weather has played a part in some of the states past crashes, but the weather was cloudy with a light wind on Sunday, which should not have caused problems for flying.
