Howard's Rock

Howard's Rock, Reports began to trickle out this week that Howard's Rock, the iconic fixture Clemson football players rub before running down the hill to enter Memorial Stadium, had been vandalized. On Wednesday evening, school officials confirmed an ongoing investigation into the incident.

"We take vandalism, especially of such an important part of our history, very seriously," Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich said in a statement. "Police are investigating."

According to the information released by the school, vandals broke into Memorial Stadium either June 2 or June 3. The culprit(s) removed the glass casing and broke off a small portion of the famed rock. The statue was not harmed.

The school released no photos of the damage, but one Clemson fan (@AndrewBeeler) shared a pic of the broken rock on Twitter.

The Tigers have rubbed Howard's Rock before every home game since 1966, when a Clemson alum brought the stone to Death Valley, S.C., from Death Valley, Calif. It was named for Hall of Fame coach Frank Howard, the winningest coach in program history. In addition to leading the football team from 1940-69, Howard briefly coached baseball, track and served as the program's athletic director.
