Alabama kidnapping: University basketball player arrested on kidnapping, An Alabama kidnapping led to the arrest of Devonta Pollard, 19. He's a former basketball player with the University of Alabama who allegedly kidnapped a six-year-old girl as leverage over her mother in a land dispute, ABC News reports June 5. His mother, Jessie Mae Pollard, was also allegedly part of the Alabama kidnapping.

Authorities said at one point kidnappers demanded a $50,000 ransom for Jashayla Hopson -- the girl they kidnapped in Mississippi.

Charges against Devonta's mother could mean a life sentence. He and five other accomplices stand to serve five years in prison. He was released on $10,000 bond.

The Alabama kidnapping occurred April 30 and Hopson was released to her mother the next day unharmed.
