Jerusalem syndrome believe they have a messianic mission, Jerusalem syndrome + believe they have a messianic mission – Imagine arriving to Jerusalem, the Holy Land for Jews, Christians and very important to Muslims too, and suddenly you feel overwhelmed with the belief that you, yes you, are the son of god, Jesus himself, or a new messiah, or maybe you have a role to play in the coming of the messiah. Well this and similar versions of this are what is known as Jerusalem syndrome and although not a daily thing it’s not massively uncommon. Jerusalem and many other holy places have to deal with people coming to this illness!

So what is happening and why?

It’s believed to be a mental illness. People find themselves in a very emotional place and their brain reacts. This of course is the basis of many mental illnesses and in this case the situation of being in Jerusalem or a similar place makes the patients brain react in a certain way.

Believing you are the messiah or have a role in the coming of one is of course something that you can almost understand. I mean, what if you genuinely are the one? What if the disbelief of humankind has just crushed each and every one of these people since Jesus and Mohammed and blamed their ways on mental illness?

You’d think god would just be shaking his head wondering how he will get the message across!
