Teacher illness: Woman lies entire year to avoid work

Teacher illness: Woman lies entire year to avoid work, Teacher illness could be coined a new term if anyone in the education system did what Ashley Barker did. Barker, a teacher at Laurel Elementary School in Polk County, Fla., fooled everyone at the school when she told them she and her father were both dying, WebPro News reports May 31.

The teacher claimed she had an illness that kept her from working an entire year, the report said. Turns out she was home the whole time for a year while everyone at school thought she was sick and dying.

Laurel Elementary did everything they could to accommodate Barker's needs due to her fake illness. She came and went as she pleased -- basically making her own schedule. The school district refused to give any details on exactly how much time Barker took off.

As one parent justifiably remarked, if this teacher can lie about this, she can lie about anything.

As unbelievable as this teacher illness story is, Barker has hired a lawyer and is fighting her termination from the school. It's a strange story and is beyond comprehension how she can even show her face since she lied so blatantly to everyone in the Polk County community over something so serious. Something like this also plays on people's emotions and they don't appreciate being manipulated.

Barker was never at doctor appointments or the hospital as she claimed, it was learned. She wasn't anywhere special during her time off from teaching -- just home.

Why would this teacher lie over her illness? Evidently she didn't want to work and didn't enjoy her job that much. Imagine what her peers, the students, and parents must think!
