The former college football star's body was found on Tuesday after he went missing over the weekend.
The 30 year old's body was discovered in woods in Michigan, about 65 miles north of Grand Rapids, following a search by dozens of people, including former teammates and current players at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, where Finnerty became one of the most successful quarterbacks in collegt football history.
Lake County Sheriff Robert Hilts has said that there were no obvious signs of heart trauma following the autopsy.
It has been reported that Finnerty was on holiday over the weekend at a cottage in Lake County's Webber Township. But he went missing on Sunday after going out fishing away from relatives.
Hilts confirmed that the autopsy had ruled out any "real obvious" causes of death, saying that "there was nothing that stood out as to the cause of death. ... We're glad there is no foul play found at this time," according to CBS News.
An examination of the brain as well as other test results are currently being conducted and those results should be available later this week.
Finnerty was a massively successful quarterback, leading Grand Valley State University to three Division II national titles and more than 50 wins during his four years in Allendale, Mich.
Family members have reported to authorities that Finnerty may have suffered a "mental episode" last week.
His body was found on Tuesday night about a mile from where he is said to have disappeared days ago.
